To install AVG 2011 on your computer, please follow these steps:

1. Verify that you have administrative rights on the computer. See FAQ 2521.
2. Go to this webpage for the latest installation file:
   AVG Anti-Virus 2011
   AVG Internet Security 2011
3. Right-click the AVG for Windows link, and then click Save (Link/Target) As:
• If unsure which file is suitable for your system, choose the AVG Download Manager file.
• If you are installing AVG on a computer without an Internet connection, use the 32bit or 64bit installer file (if unsure, choose the 32bit version).
4. Save the file to the Desktop.
5. Double-click the downloaded AVG installation file on your Desktop. 
6. Follow the installation wizard.
7. When prompted, use the copy&paste method to enter your AVG License Number.

AVG 2011 should now be successfully installed on your computer. If the installation is not successful, we would like to request the AVG installation log files for analysis.

To send us the AVG installation log files:

1. Enable the viewing of hidden files and folders, as described in FAQ 2009.
2. Open the following folder:
   • for Windows XP:
     C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MFAData\
   • for Windows Vista / Windows 7:
     C:\ProgramData\MFAData\
3. In this folder locate mfa-yyyymmdd-xxxxxx.log and msi-yyyymmdd-xxxxxx.log.
4. Send these files to AVG Customer Services.

When upgrading to AVG 2011 from AVG 9.0, all current settings will be kept and the previous version will be automatically removed.

To upgrade to AVG 2011 from AVG 9.0 please perform the following steps:

1. Verify that you have administrative rights on the computer. See FAQ 2521.
2. Go to this webpage for the latest installation file:

   AVG Internet Security 2011
3. Right-click the AVG for Windows link, and then click Save (Link/Target) As:
• If unsure which file is suitable for your system, get the AVG Download Manager file

4. Save the file to the Desktop.
5. Double-click the downloaded AVG installation file on your Desktop.

4. Send these files to AVG Customer Services.

If you think you have a virus on your computer, please install AVG by following the steps described in FAQ 3250.

If it is not possible to install AVG this way because of an infection, please install AVG in Safe Mode as described in FAQ 3618.

If you are installing AVG and the installation process fails, there are several steps you can take to install AVG successfully.

1. Make sure you are installing AVG under an account with Administrative rights
This step is vital for correct and successful installation, since AVG needs to copy some of its files into folders, which are not accessible by an account with User permissions. For information on how to check whether you are logged into Windows as a user with administrative rights, please check FAQ 2521

2. Always use the latest AVG installation file
AVG program is being improved continuously, including the installer which is responsible for correct installation process. Moreover, using the latest installation package eliminates the need to download larger program and virus base updates immediately after installation. To download the up-to-date installation file, please visit the Download section of our website, choose your product and click the "AVG for Windows" link.

3. Close all running programs, disable security applications
Before running the installation file, please close all unnecessary running programs and make sure that there is no security application which might interfere with the installation process. Typical examples of programs preventing successful AVG installation are anti-spyware utilities and registry monitors/cleaners, which are preventing access to Windows registry. AVG needs to be installed also into registry to allow the functionality and protection it was designed to offer.

4.  Remove possible conflicting applications
If you are using an application which might be in conflict with AVG, please disable it or uninstall it completely before running the installation. In general, AVG may conflict with such application, that provides similar or same functionality as one of the AVG components. This is especially important for other programs with one or more of these features:

• real-time protection against viruses (same as AVG Resident Shield)
• monitoring or control of network traffic (same or similar to AVG Firewall)
• checking or filtering of e-mails (same or similar to AVG E-mail Scanner)
• checking of websites, web content filters (same or similar to AVG Online Shield)

5. Disable UAC (Windows Vista and Windows 7 only)
On Windows Vista and Windows 7, the function User Account Control may in some cases create a copy of specific AVG files in a virtual folder. This limits AVG functionality after the installation. The UAC function can be disabled in Windows Control Panel -> User accounts -> Turn User Account Control on or off -> uncheck "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer" -> click OK button and restart the computer.

If the installation is not successful, we would like to request the AVG installation log files for analysis.

To send us the AVG installation log files:

1. Enable viewing of hidden files and folders, as described in FAQ 2009.
2. Open following folder:
   • for Windows XP:
     C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MFAData\
   • for Windows Vista / Windows 7:
     C:\ProgramData\MFAData\
3. In this folder locate "mfa-yyyymmdd-xxxxxx.log " and "msi-yyyymmdd-xxxxxx.log".
4. Send all files to AVG Customer Services.

To reinstall, uninstall or repair installation of the AVG application please proceed as follows:

1. Verify that you have administrative rights on the computer. See FAQ 2521.
2. Go to this Web page for the latest installation file:
   AVG Anti-Virus 2011
   AVG Internet Security 2011
3. Right-click the red "Download AVG now" button, and then click Save (Link/Target) As.
4. Save the file to the Desktop.
5. Double-click the AVG installation file on your Desktop.
6. The following options will be displayed during the installation process:
• Add/Remove Components - choose this option if you want to add or remove some AVG component.
• Repair installation - this option repairs or reinstalls missing or damaged components of AVG.
• Uninstall - this option removes the AVG program from your PC.

In case you wish to extend the license period of the AVG program with your new AVG License Number, please refer to FAQ 3460 for more information.

We would like to inform you that AVG 2011 does not support installation on Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows 2000 Server.

These system do not provide features and functionality that are necessary for proper detection and especially removal of malware. The systems are insecure and have not been maintained by Microsoft for several years already. Therefore we cannot guarantee sufficient protection.

If you use Microsoft Windows 2000 you have currently two options for using AVG protection:

1. Upgrade you operating system

You can buy a newer operating system to use on your computer. The list of systems where AVG 2011 can be used is available on the product pages (for example AVG Internet Security). For list of all supported operating systems see www.avg.com/special-old-os

2. Use AVG 9.0

AVG 9.0 still remains supported by AVG Technologies and can be installed on Windows 2000. If you are already using AVG 9.0 you do not need to do anything. If you want to install AVG 9.0 with you current license see FAQ 3250.

The Database is outdated message is displayed, when the database is older than one week. To resolve this situation, please proceed as follows:

A. Try to update AVG

1. Open AVG by double-clicking the AVG icon on your Desktop or in the system tray.
2. Click on the Update now button.
3. If a list of available updates is shown, click on the Update button in the newly opened window.
4. If the update proceeded correctly but your AVG still reports outdated virus base, continue with procedure B.

B. Check your system date and time
AVG will inform you, when your computer date is set incorrectly. In such case, please proceed as follows:

C. Try to delete the temporary update files

1. Open AVG User Interface.
2. On the Tools menu select Advanced Settings.
3. Navigate to the Update -> Manage branch.
4. Click Delete temporary update files.

After deleting the temporary update files please try to update your AVG.

In case AVG cannot be updated due to issues with connection to our update servers, please refer to FAQ 3446.

If you try to update AVG and the error Update failed. Connection with update server has failed. is displayed, it can be caused by one of the following reasons:

Connection to AVG update servers is blocked
In case you are using a Firewall or a Content filtering applicaiton, please make sure that it is not preventing AVG from connecting to the Internet. If you are using Windows Firewall, AVG will be allowed automatically during the installation, however this is not possible for all other Firewall or Content filtering solutions. You can temporarily disable such a program to verify whether it is affecting AVG, or add AVG files and servers to its exceptions. The list of files used by AVG, and servers to which is AVG connecting are available in FAQ 3487.

Your Internet connection is not fully functional
Your Internet connection to AVG update servers may stop working in some cases, although standard Internet browsing works correctly. Proceed as follows to rectify such a situation:

1. Open menu Start -> (Settings) -> Control Panel.
2. Double-click on Network connections.
3. Right-click on Local area connection and select Repair.
4. Try to update AVG.

Your Internet settings are not correct
Even if your Internet connection is working correctly, incorrect DNS servers may be filled in, affecting AVG update. This can be caused e.g. by some virus that was previously on your computer.

You are using dial-up connection

In case you are using dial-up connection, you should configure AVG to use this connection.

1. Open AVG by double-clicking on the AVG icon your Desktop, or in system tray.
2. Open menu Tools -> Advanced settings -> Update -> Dial-up.
3. Select Use dial-up connections and fill the required information.
4. Click OK to save the settings and try to update again.

If you want to update AVG from local storage (CD, directory on HDD, USB Flash drive) you can do it this way:

• Open AVG User Interface
• From top menu "Tools" select "Update from directory" option
• Navigate to the folder where AVG update files are stored and click "OK"

On this page you can find several modules for download. Here is description of their purposes:

• All necessary modules - program update. When applied, components of AVG will be updated to latest versions. Virus database is not affected.
• LinkScanner DB full - complete database of LinkScanner detection. Improves detection of harmfull webpages.
• Additional module: ifw - update for Firewall database. Enhances AVG Firewall detection of known application.
• Additional module: ichjw - update of certificates database for core component. Adds detection of new trusted applications which improves speed of scanning.
• Additional module: idat - update for Identity Protection component (whitelist). Improves detection.
• AVI - first part of virus database update. Improves detection for more components (e.g. Resident shield, Online shield, scans).
• IAVI - second part of virus database update. Improves detection for more components (e.g. Resident shield, Online shield, scans).

Please note that it is not possible to update AVG from a folder in the following locations:

• shared folders (without access rights for Everyone or System)
• substituted drives
• emulated drives
• other resources with limited access for System account

To upgrade your AVG 8.x or AVG 9.x License Number into the corresponding AVG 2011 License Number free of charge, follow the steps below:

• Enter your AVG 8.x or AVG 9.x License Number into the upgrade form.
• Press the Upgrade to AVG 2011 button.
• The new AVG 2011 License Number will be displayed together with the appropriate AVG 2011 installation package download link.

You can also enter your e-mail address to have the new AVG 2011 License Number delivered via e-mail.
